Monument to "Kopeyka" unveiled in Togliatti

In Togliatti, a monument was unveiled to the first car of the Volga Automobile Plant - the legendary "Kopeyka" VAZ-2101, which this year celebrated the 50th anniversary of the start of production. The project was initiated by the Lada History club of enthusiasts; earlier it built a replica of the rally version of the model. The monument was installed in the park in honor of the 50th anniversary of AvtoVAZ.

The 1970 specification car is assembled from Italian and domestic parts. It is painted in color 483 ("sea wave"), this was the first instance of the VAZ-2101, released on the night of April 18-19, 1970. Inside the glass box "Kopeyka" is fixed on an assembly hanger.

The honorary workers of AvtoVAZ, as well as the chairman of the Patriot plant veterans club Sergey Perevezentsev (he worked at the enterprise from 1967 to 2010), attended the opening ceremony of the monument. According to him, the idea to immortalize "Kopeyka" came up with him and his colleagues back in 2014.

The head of the Lada History club, Sergey Diogrik, added that there is still a model on the pedestal and not a full-fledged car, it cannot move under its own power. In the evening, when the illumination of the monument turns on, the sidelights and the VAZ-2101 head optics light up.

Note that "Kopeyka" became the most massive domestic car: from 1970 to 1988, 4.8 million copies of the first model were manufactured (the record is still being held).

2101 was based on the licensed Italian FIAT-124 sedan, however, especially for the USSR, its design was modernized and adapted for use on bad roads (over 800 design changes were made). The original FIAT-124 in 1967 bore the prestigious title of "Car of the Year in Europe".

The production of the VAZ-2101 modification continued until 1982, version 21011 was made until 1983, and 21013 until 1988. And if we consider that the entire classic Zhiguli family was built on one platform, then the history of the series ended in 2012, when the VAZ-2107 ceased to be produced at the Izhevsk Automobile Plant.

About 400 thousand "Kopeks" are still registered. This is a true living history of the Russian car industry.
