Traffic lights of an unusual square shape appeared on Russian roads. So far, they have been put into test operation on five streets in Moscow. According to employees of the Moscow Transport Department, this is not only a design move but also an engineering solution that allows installing innovative filling in traffic lights.

Square sections have advantages. Firstly, due to the increase in the area of illumination, the maximum brightness increases, so that the signals are better visible to drivers and pedestrians. Secondly, such displays can also serve as monitors on which you can display any image, including a message about traffic jams, repair work, deteriorating weather, and other emergencies.

Plus, the new traffic lights can give permission for the simultaneous movement of vehicles on a turn and crossing the road without the need to install an additional section.

The number of functions has also increased. So, the developers have built-in security cameras on the streets and even sensors to track harmful emissions. “The work will be continued next year. We plan to install new traffic lights and equip pedestrian crossings. Our goal is to calm down traffic and make the streets safer, ”said Moscow Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov.

In the future, the experiment with square traffic lights can be extended to other cities in the country.
